American Airlines is one of the top airlines in the United States of America, serving over 140 million customers annually. This top-rated airline offers top-notch on-board entertainment and easy-to-use apps. Use this handy guide to get the most out of your American Airline experience.
American Airlines has been operating since 1926, with its first flight. Eight years later, American Airlines became more of what we know today American Airlines has flights to more than 250 destinations in over 40 countries across North America, South America, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia. One thing is for sure, booking a flight is easier than ever. With the internet, the opportunities are endless, but also overwhelming. Let’s talk about some ways you can book your flight.
Airline Flight Booking
There are a few options to book an American Airlines flight. First, you can go directly to their website. If you book directly with the airline, you can utilize your AAdvantage credit card if you have one, to maximize the benefits. And this is by far the most convenient option. Later in this article, we will go into more depth about the AAdvantage card. Also, booking directly will give you more options such as a booking package deal with cars and hotels for your trip. This will most likely be the most expensive option, but the easiest.
The second option is to book with a flight agent. If you book with a flight agent, you are giving authority to someone else to find the best price and schedule that meets your criteria. Since travel agents book with multiple airlines, you must tell your travel agent that you want to book with American Airlines. Typically, you do not have to pay a travel agent, since they are working commission based. Make sure that your travel agent has a good reputation, and is offering you the best deals.
The last way, and the most cost-effective way, is by booking through a third-party site. This option is potentially the best if you do not have an AAdvantage credit card. By booking through a budget flight scanning sight such as Kayak, Skyscanner, or Google flights, you can typically find cheaper flights than booking directly from the Airline. Beware of which site you are using, because it could very well be a fake ticket if you are not careful. This option will take more work, but if you are a budget traveler it is worth it.

American Airlines Airpass
If credit cards are not your thing, then you can purchase an “Airpass”.
The American Airlines Airpass first started in the 1980s and was first called “the unlimited AAirpass”. This 250k USD air pass gave unlimited flights. As you can imagine, that did not work out so well. Members were using it like crazy, and American Airlines was losing big money. Members were costing the airline millions of dollars, between canceled flights and booking for strangers this well-intended membership card was not working out. Today, 25 of these members still exist with valid membership cards.
While today this card does not offer unlimited flights, it has some benefits worth noting. This is a membership package that offers incredible benefits similar to their AAdvantage card. The prices range from 10,000 USD to 30,000 USD, making this a much pricier option. So what perks come with this lavish card? With the Airpass, passengers are allowed two or more complimentary checked luggage, priority upgrades, and the opportunities to share your benefits with a guest.
Most enticing, members can use this card to access the Admiral clubs at the airports. However, this does not offer Global Entry or TSA precheck like the AAdvantage card does. The cost and benefits of this membership package make it a perfect option for business travelers.
Important Reservation Notes
Let’s talk about something pretty tedious, but very important. If you sadly need to cancel your wonderful trip to the Bahamas. If you have a refundable ticket (usually the ticket is refundable if you booked directly from the airline), then you can request a refund within 24 hours of purchasing your ticket, if you purchased your ticket before two days of departure. Yup, so that means if you have a change of plans last minute, you will not be able to receive a refund. Only under extenuating circumstances, such as the death of your travel companion.
If you need to make changes to your ticket you will need to know your ticket number. To find the location of your ticket number, look at the receipt or boarding pass and look for the first three digits “001”. American Airlines always begins their ticket numbers with “001”. If you are still having trouble, contact American Airlines directly at 800-433-7300 for the English hotline.
If you take American Airlines frequently or plan to, then consider getting an AAdvantage credit card. With this card, you can score seat upgrades and flight awards. A 125 USD flight discount is also given after spending $20,000 or more in purchases during your card membership year. This could be a great option if you have been craving to travel more luxuriously. Before you apply, make sure to check your credit score and income situation. If you apply with bad credit, it will worsen your credit.
In addition to scoring upgrades with your American Airline flights, you also have access to the Admirals club. Depending on your status, with the airline, it will affect the cost of your membership. Usually, the cost of this membership is 650 USD, so if you have elite status, it really pays off.
It is also important to note that there are multiple AAdvantage cards, each with their own set of benefits and qualifications. Learn more at NerdWallet.
However, if you’re unsure about how often you will use American Airlines we recommend you check out a general travel credit card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserved, this travel card offers airport lounge perks, points for flights, and Global Entry Credit. This will allow you to have travel perks without tying the knot to one airline.
TSA PreCheck is a program where low-risk travelers can breeze through security without having to go through the hassles such as: removing your belt, removing liquids from your bag, or removing your laptop. To qualify for this you must be a USA citizen or lawful permanent resident. If you have the AAdvantage card, you will be given bonus credit to apply for global entry or TSA PreCheck. If you apply for Global Entry, you will have to do more steps, but it will come with TSA PreCheck (therefore this is the best decision). If you do not have AAdvantage or another credit card that offers this service, it will cost 100 USD nonrefundable pay. Once you are approved, you will not have to reapply for the next five years.
When you get TSA PreCheck, you will have your ID number. If you have AAdvantage, you will only have to put in this information the first time you reserve a flight with American Airlines. The times after that, you will not have to. If you do not have an AAdvantage card, you will have to manually submit information for every reservation. Just another perk to consider getting the AAdvantage card!
American Airlines Phone App
One of the most unique features of this app is that you can order food from airport restaurants and grab it to go before you book your flight. This nifty app does it all!
Before you book and board, make sure to download the American Airlines app. This free app is available for both iOS and Android. This multi-functional app lets you check on the status of your bags, instantly rebook delayed flights, and even lets you stream the on-board entertainment options.
